1930 ROYAL MODEL P
This is the Royal model P typewriter. It was first introduced in 1926 as the first portable in the Royal line. Royal was way behind other manufacturers in the introduction of it portables. Original company philosophy was to concentrate on the full size business machines. George E. Smith, the then Royal president, did not believe the private individual was a serious buyer for typewriters. Other manufacturers, proved him wrong. Royal entered the portable market 6 years later then the rest of the competition, but came in with gusto. They employed huge marketing strategies, such as dropping typewriters out of airplanes...in crates with parachutes...to promote the product. In a short period of time Royal reported they had sold their 1 millionth typewriter, and went on to become the leading typewriter manufacturer in the United States. The model one was a huge success. It incorporated most of the features of the larger full size typewriters in a small lightweight package. The second generation of the model one saw only minor changes. These included redesign of the top covers to cover the ribbon spools and protect them from dust, as well as expansion of the available colors
